Clint Dempsey gives a thumbs up to USMNT fans

SAN FRANCISCO – US men's national team captain Clint Dempsey was a late scratch from the team's starting lineup against Azerbaijan on Tuesday night with groin soreness.


A US Soccer spokesperson said the injury was picked up during warmups for the match and his removal from the lineup was a precautionary measure.


Dempsey was replaced in the lineup by forward Chris Wondolowski and Tim Howard took the captain's armband.
