Peguy Luyindula escapes serious injury, could return to action for New York Red Bulls this weekend

Peguy Luyindula looks to have escaped a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Luyindula missed the New York Red Bulls’ 2-0 loss to Toronto FC this past weekend after suffering a calf strain in last Thursday’s training session, but the versatile midfielder is not expected to miss much time. In fact, it seems like there is a chance that Luyindula could play as soon as in this Saturday’s home game against the Portland Timbers (7 pm ET, MLS Live).

“I would list Peguy as day-to-day,” Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke told reporters via conference call Tuesday afternoon. “As soon as he feels up to it and ready to go, we’re going to get him on the field and move on from there. As of now, I list him as day-to-day.”

Luyindula did not partake in New York’s training session on Tuesday, but he will be hoping to return to action quickly. The Red Bulls play the Timbers this weekend and then travel to face reigning MLS Cup champions Sporting Kansas City next Tuesday before a brief break in MLS play that lasts until June 8 for New York.

The veteran Frenchman, who will celebrate his 35th birthday on May 25, has started seven of the 11 matches he has played in so far this season. He has two goals on the year.
