Canada didn't come close to qualifying for the World Cup, but Toronto-born Jonathan de Guzman is on the roster of one of the top teams headed to Brazil this summer.

The 26-year-old Swansea City midfielder, who obtained his Dutch citizenship in 2008 and has been capped eight times by the senior team, was named to head coach Louis van Gaal's 30-man preliminary roster Tuesday, which includes just eight holdovers from the 2010 runner-up squad. Youth was van Gaal's main theme with 14 players aged 23 years or younger, including 19-year-olds Tonny Vilhena and Karim Rekik.

Mainstays Robin van PersieArjen RobbenWesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart are all included in the initial squad.

One surprising omission was Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel, who has been capped 37 times by the senior Oranje side, most recently in their March 5 friendly against France.

Part of Group B, the Netherlands kick off their tournament June 13 against Spain in Salvador before games against Australia on June 18 in Porto Alegre and June 23 against Chile in São Paulo.
