GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jose Torres assisted on the winning goal as Tigres UANL rounded off what has been a disappointing season with a 2-1 home win over Atlas on Saturday.
The Texas native featured for 81 minutes in the center of Tigres’ midfield, stringing together passes well, taking the set-pieces and setting up Alan Pulido with a pass that the Mexico international took under control, charged down on goal and slotted into the corner of the goal in the 75th minute.
Torres also crossed in for Hugo Ayala in the 66th, but the defender put his header just past the post.
Chiapas finished their season with a 5-2 win over Atlante on Saturday, with Gabriel Farfan left on the bench and Jonathan Bornstein not in Los Potros’ 18 in their final match in Mexico’s top division. The team was already relegated to the Ascenso MX.
The results mean Club Tijuana are likely to be the only team regularly featuring Americans in the Liga MX playoffs, although Xolos still have to wait for the rest of Sunday’s results to confirm their place.
Finally, in the second division, Necaxa’s American duo of Sonny Guadarrama and Ventura Alvarado crashed out of the playoff semifinal, drawing 0-0 in Saturday’s second leg and 0-0 over the two games against Estudiantes Tecos.
Both Guadarrama and Alvarado went the full 90 minutes.
