American Exports: Jose Torres sees red in otherwise solid outing for Tigres UANL

Jose Francisco Torres

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Jose Torres was the only American in action in Mexico on Sunday, and despite a solid outing saw red late in Tigres UANL’s 2-0 win on Sunday against Atlante in Cancún.

The Texan appeared to throw a punch at Atlante’s Alberto García in the 86th minute after being confronted by Luis Venegas, following a late challenge by the American.

Torres had helped Tigres control the midfield up to that point, but will be disappointed he reacted to the provocation, especially with the World Cup creeping up.

The win moves Tigres to 13th place – three points outside the playoff spots – with next week’s game against Tijuana and their American contingent a must-win, although Torres is likely to miss out through suspension.

Jonathan Bornstein was an unused substitute for Atlante, who are now six points adrift at the foot of the relegation table, with just three rounds of games remaining.
