In case you missed it, Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney scored an absolutely brilliant volley from just inside the halfway line on Saturday against West Ham United.


It was immediately compared to a similarly opporunistic goal scored by former LA Galaxy star David Beckham during his time at Man. United.


Rooney's submission for worldwide Goal of the Year, along with this tweet from MLSsoccer.com's Armchair Analyst Matthew Doyle, got us thinking about other great goals scored from near the midfield line.


With that, we present to you, the five best goals scored from midfield in MLS history:

Way back in 1999, D.C. United midfielder Marco Etcheverry caught current Real Salt Lake head coach Jeff Cassar well off his line.



Before he left for Europe, current Columbus Crew defender Michael Parkhurst nailed a 65-yarder for the New England Revolution.



Beckham's 70-yard exploits weren't exclusive to his time Europe. He bagged this bomb against Kansas City in 2008.



The next year, Wizards forward Claudio López sought midfield retribution against the Beckham and the Galaxy.



And most recently, FC Dallas defender Jair Benítez abruptly put an end to this counterattack when he scored from 50 yards out last year.
