The Colorado Rapids have parted ways with one of the key contributors from their 2010 MLS Cup run, announcing Thursday they have waived longtime goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
Pickens, 32, has been with the Rapids since 2009 after spending the first part of his professional career, from 2004-07 with the Chicago Fire. He spent 2008 trialing in England, and even landed a three-month stint with Queens Park Rangers, but failed to stick with a team in the long-term.
“We want to thank Matt for all his contributions to our club in his five seasons here,” Rapids VP of soccer operations and technical director Paul Bravo said in a statement.
“He has handled this difficult situation with professionalism and we wish him all the best moving forward in his career, as he will always hold a special place in Rapids history. This move allows us additional flexibility on our roster, and gives Matt a chance to find a new club soon.”

Pickens finished his Colorado career with 116 appearances for the team, all starts, and holds franchise records for in career games played (among goalkeepers), shutouts, and wins. He started two matches in 2013 before suffering a broken arm, missing the bulk of the season and backing up Clint Irwin after his return from injury. In his MLS career with Colorado and Chicago, Pickens has played 156 games (154 starts), keeping 40 shutouts.
Colorado are now carrying three goalkeepers in total on their roster: Irwin, recently signed NASL veteran Joe Nasco, and 2014 SuperDraft pick John Berner.
