Leo Gonzalez among Seattle Sounders' injury concerns on backline heading into season opener

TUKWILA, Wash. — Heading into the final week of preseason training, the Seattle Sounders still have some question marks looming over a few positions on the backline.

DeAndre Yedlin and Chad Marshall were both held out of Monday’s light training session, but head coach Sigi Schmid declared that he expected both to be fit enough to start in time for Saturday’s season-opener against Sporting Kansas City (3 pm ET, NBCSN).

Although Leo González did participate in the training session, indications are that he might not be ready to start. The left back has been recovering from groin surgery all offseason and only recently started playing in games. Most recently, González played 60 minutes against the College of Charleston on Saturday.

“He had no issues,” Schmid said of González. “I think he’s definitely close, probably about 85 percent of the way there.”

Although Schmid insisted that González remains the Sounders’ No. 1 option, Dylan Remick may get the nod this week.

“You don’t lose [the starter’s job] because of injury,” Schmid said. “Leo has proven himself to be a very competent left back for us and does a great job defending for us. But we know there’s enough competition that we need Leo at 100 percent.

"Remick has done well enough in preseason where he’s put a stamp on if Leo isn’t 100 percent ‘I’m ready and prepared to play.’”
