American Exports: Jozy Altidore, Sunderland get leg up on Manchester United in Capital One Cup

AMSTERDAM – Jozy Altidore and Sunderland got a leg up in a Capital One Cup semifinal on Tuesday, posting a 2-1 home victory over Manchester United.

After Steven Fletcher left with a knock, the US striker came on to work the final 18 minutes plus another five in stoppage time. Early in his shift, Altidore saw yellow for manhandling Red Devils right back Rafael in a duel.



The Black Cats, whose best tourney showing to date was a lost final in 1985, will now pack up their advantage for the return trip to Old Trafford on Jan. 22.
