American Exports: Brad Guzan gets no favors from defense as Aston Villa draw with West Brom

AMSTERDAM – A pair of US internationals took part in some European-style Monday night football, with Brad Guzan backstopping Aston Villa to a 2-2 comeback draw with derby hosts West Bromwich Albion.

The Villans were down two after just 11 minutes, with their defense doing Guzan no favors on a pair of picturesque Shane Long strikes. The former Chivas USA man had a strong night, with two saves and several aerial displays of area command.

The visitors rewarded Guzan by hitting twice in the final 23 minutes, moving to three games unbeaten in league play. However, the draw saw them slip a rung to 12th place.

Over in Serie A, Michael Bradley was on for the final nine minutes as AS Roma slipped out of the Italian penthouse with a frustrating 0-0 home draw with Cagliari.

The US midfielder made a last-minute bid for the winner, only to have his sharp angle header blocked away. Roma came up empty despite taking 19 shots, falling to second behind champs Juventus with a third straight draw since the end of a record 10-hame win streak to start the Scudetto chase.
