Canadian Exports: Striker Frank Jonke leaves Europe to sign with NASL's FC Edmonton

Another Canadian playing overseas is heading home.

Frank Jonke, a 28-year-old striker from Pickering, Ont., will be joining FC Edmonton of the NASL for the 2014 season, the club announced Wednesday.

“Frank gives us a big, strong target player,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said in a release. “Someone we can build off and keep us in possession.”

Jonke has played the last four seasons for three different clubs in Finland. He spent 2013 with FF Jaro, scoring seven goals in 26 appearances.

He earned his first call-up to the men’s national team in January – when Miller was interim head coach of Canada – in a 0-0 draw against the USA.

With the men’s national team currently riding a 10-game goalless streak, being closer to home could help put Jonke on the radar of current Canada manager Benito Floro.
