MLS Int'l Roundup: Honduras thumped by Brazil; Bright Dike, Nigeria qualify for World Cup

Brazil's Bernard scores on Honduras

Honduras and their MLS-based contingent suffered a lopsided loss in their friendly matchup against Brazil, dropping a 5-0 result to the 2014 World Cup hosts in Miami.

San Jose defender Victor Bernardez, Houston midfielder Boniek Garcia and New England forward Jerry Bengtson were all in the starting lineup for Los Catrachos, while San Jose's Marvin Chavez entered for his club teammate Bernardez in the 64th minute.

After conceding just one goal, scored by Bernard, in the first half Honduras fell apart defensively in the second. Bayern Munich defender Dante grabed No. 2 in the 55th minute, while Maicon, Willian and Hulk made it a rout, with five different players scoring Brazil's goals.

On a day when many national teams were immersed in friendlies, either preparing for next summer's World Cup or the future beyond, Toronto FC's Bright Dike had the most to shout about among MLSers on international duty in one of the day's few competitive games.

Dike was in the squad and dressed for Nigeria's World Cup qualifying playoff with Ethiopia with the Super Eagles carrying a 2-1 aggregate advantage from the first leg. Through Victor Obinna and Liverpool's Victor Moses, Nigeria went on to claim a 2-0 victory that booked their spot in Brazil.

In Asia, LA Galaxy defender A.J. DeLaGarza made his debut for the Guam national team in a 1-1 draw at Laos that – according to DeLaGarza – was marred by some controversial refereeing decisions. New England's Ryan Guy was also in the squad for the Matao, who will stay in Southeast Asia to face Cambodia in an upcoming friendly. League pool goalkeeper Doug Herrick, who spent time with the Seattle Sounders in 2013, also featured in goal for Guam.
