What can you do in Salt Lake City on a Tuesday night, after you've just won some serious silverware? Not much, evidently.


On the night they raised the 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup trophy, D.C. United — otherwise mired in an historically bad MLS season — learned quickly that the options for the night's celebrations would be severely limited.

Surely, they must have thought, it wouldn't be quite like what it turned out to be, though. Surely they didn't believe they would celebrate the club's 11th major domestic trophy in a Salt Lake City hotel weight room.


But according to a story from The Washington Post's DC Sports Blog, that's exactly the way the night of Oct. 1 and the following early morning were spent by the Black-and-Red.


For future reference, when a professional sports team makes too much noise celebrating a championship in their hotel room block, they get asked to take the party to the hotel gym.


“Apparently we were making too much noise,” defender Ethan White told DC Sports Blog. “Some guy down the hall was having a rough night apparently.”


“They asked us to go to the weight room,” forward Chris Pontius noted. “It was the most awkward-slash-entertaining experience I’ve ever had.”


“I wouldn’t choose to celebrate a championship in Salt Lake City on a Tuesday night,” midfielder John Thorrington told Steinberg. “But I always say some of the most fun and memorable vacations are the ones that don’t go the way you expect.
