Former MLS goalkeeper and English Premier league stalwart Brad Friedel is one of the candidates to become the new head coach of the Columbus Crew, according to a report.
Fox Soccer’s Grant Wahl first reported the news on Tuesday that Friedel, who hails from Ohio and starred for the Crew during their first two seasons in the league, has already been interviewed by the club for a potential coaching spot next season.
The Columbus Crew declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday.
The Crew parted ways with former head coach Robert Warzycha and installed technical director Brian Bliss as interim head coach on Sept. 2. Bliss – who last month made his intentions clear that he is interested in taking over the head coach position going forward into next season – has piloted the team to a 4-2-0 record since taking over.
Columbus are currently four points out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with two games remaining on their schedule after missing the postseason for the first time in five seasons last year.
Friedel, 42, was the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for the Crew in 1997 before he left for a career in the EPL that has spanned 16 seasons. He has played for Tottenham since 2011. He also amassed 82 caps with the US national team between 1992-2004.
