American Exports: Tim Howard tagged with own goal as Everton lose for first time vs. Manchester City

Tim Howard

The last undefeated team in the English Premier League has fallen.

US goalkeeper Tim Howard and Everton lost 3-1 at Manchester City on Saturday and watched the Citizens overtake them in the EPL standings. Everton (3-1-3, 12pts) are stuck in fifth place, still just three points behind league leaders Arsenal.

The Toffees actually took the lead at the Etihad Stadium in the 16th minute through Romelu Lukaku, only to see Manchester City storm back just seconds later. Howard pounced off his line, but could not prevent an Alvaro Negredo shot from rolling into the goal for the equalizer.

Howard was then beaten to the far post just before halftime by Sergio Aguero, who collected a through ball on the right side of the area and fired a laser inside the far left post to put the home team up 2-1.

But the turning point came in the 68th minute when Everton's Seamus Coleman was whistled for a soft penalty kick foul on Pablo Zabaleta. Aguero stepped up to take the penalty, but Howard read it well and parried it off the right post, only for the ball to hit the 'keeper on the back of the head and cross the goal line.

It was recorded as an own goal by Howard, who was booked for protests just before the spot kick was taken.

Everton could not do much to trouble Manchester City for the rest of the way and Howard needed to make one more point-blank stop on Samir Nasri in stoppage time to keep the score respectable.
