American Exports: Sacha Kljestan, Anderlecht dealt heavy blow in Champions League

Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht react to a Champions League loss against Olympiacos

AMSTERDAM – Despite a solid showing from Sacha Kljestan, Anderlecht went down to a wasteful 3-0 defeat against UEFA Champions League Group C visitors Olympiacos on Wednesday.

The US midfielder was horse-collared in front of goal in the 24th minute, earning his side a chance to cancel their early deficit from the spot. However, teen striker Aleksandar Mitrovic had his soft penalty attempt smothered by Olympiacos netminder Roberto.

Kljestan continued his fine build work, helping the Belgian champs ring up a massive possession advantage, as well as 10 more shots and seven more corner kicks than the guests. More Roberto robberies and some woeful Anderlecht finishing later, Kostas Mitroglou hit twice over the final 34 minutes to complete both his hat trick and a rout for the Reds.

Anderlecht remained pointless at the bottom of Group C through two games. Next, they'll face a scary short trip across the border to visit early group leaders Paris Saint-Germain on October 23.
