The new English Premier League season may only be five matches old, but last-place Sunderland are not waiting for things to turn around.
With just one point from the 15 available to start the campaign, the club has already parted ways with manager Paolo Di Canio, who was responsible for the acquisition of USMNT striker Jozy Altidore from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar over the recent offseason.
Altidore has played in four of Sunderland's five matches and is still without a goal on the year, but the rest of the squad has only scored thee times.
Sunderland's only point on the year thus far came in a 1-1 tie at Southampton. The other four results were losses to Fulham, Crystal Palace, Arsenal and to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. After the most recent loss, Di Canio had a postgame showdown with the fans which may have helped accelerate his departure.
As far as Di Canio's successor, American soccer fans will be interested to see the names of LA Galaxy manager Bruce Arena, USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann and Egypt's American coach Bob Bradley among the potential candidates listed by the oddsmakers.
