American Exports: Aron Johannsson's goal puts AZ Alkmaar halfway to Europa League group stage

Aron Johannsson celebrates a goal for AZ Alkmaar

AMSTERDAM – Aron Jóhannsson continued his perfect scoring record on the young campaign, striking the winner in AZ Alkmaar's 3-1 victory at Europa League playoff-round foes Atromitos on Thursday.

With his side up one in the 74th minute, the newest US forward got loose in the right channel to breach the Greek hosts' area. Working calmly on the dribble, Jóhannsson fooled the last defender off his feet with a shoulder dip before picking his spot to beat the goalkeeper.

The goal was his fifth in as many competitive matches on the term. It also made him the second American in three years to hit in consecutive Europa League matches for AZ, what with predecessor Jozy Altidore having scored in three straight back in 2011.

Also in Europa League qualifying, Conor O'Brien went unused as FC Nordsjælland settled for a 1-1 draw against opening-leg hosts Elfsborg.

Elsewhere, Brad Friedel watched from the away dugout as Tottenham Hotspur put one foot in the group stage with a 5-0 rout of defending Georgian champions Dinamo Tbilisi.
