MLS on Loan: Corey Hertzog tallies game-winner in FC Edmonton debut

Corey Hertzog

All went according to plan for Corey Hertzog on Sunday, as the Vancouver Whitecaps forward scored just 16 minutes into his debut for NASL side FC Edmonton in a 1-0 win over San Antonio.

Hertzog (above) was loaned out by the 'Caps earlier this week and had little time to acclimate to his new squad, but it took him just 15 minutes to notch his first goal. Hertzog finished off a pass from Neil Hlavaty after a San Antonio turnover at the edge of the Scorpions’ penalty box.

Hertzog logged a full 90 minutes in his debut.

Elsewhere in the NASL, five MLS loanees were on display in Minnesota United FC’s 3-1 victory over Fort Lauderdale. For the second week in a row, FC Dallas Homegrown Richard Sanchezstarted in goal for the Strikers, with Dallas defender Bradlee Baladez and Galaxy midfielder Kenney Walker each coming on in the second half.

Their efforts were in vain, however, as Minnesota took the match with a two-goal cushion thanks in part to Montreal Impact midfielders Calum Mallace and Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who each started and played the bulk of the match.

Real Salt Lake midfielder Enzo Martinez started and played 59 minutes for the Carolina RailHawks as they drew 1-1 with the Atlanta Silverbacks.

In USL PRO action, results this past week have set the stage for a title showdown between MLS affiliates the Richmond Kickers and Orlando City SC on Wednesday. The two teams are tied atop the table with 51 points going into the final week of the season.

Last Wednesday, Richmond benefited from the two goals of Dynamo forward Brian Ownby and the goalkeeping of D.C. United’s Andrew Dykstra when they defeated the Dayton Dutch Lions 5-2.

The third-place Harrisburg City Islanders continue to put their MLS contingent to use, as several players saw time in the 2-1 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday and again in the 3-1 win over VSI Tampa Bay on Saturday. Cristhian Hernandez scored a goal in the loss, while Don Anding picked up an assist in the win.
