Sepp Blatter

Remember all the talk about the 2022 Qatar World Cup taking place in the winter because of the searing hot summer temperatures in the Persian Gulf state?

Well, now we have some dates that have leaked.

According to what sources told Kicker in Germany, FIFA president Sepp Blatter will be seeking the 2022 World Cup to be rescheduled to start in mid-November with the final played on December 18, 2022. Earlier reports seemed to indicate that January 2022 was the preferred target date.

From a US standpoint, this could it be the best World Cup ever with the potential of matches during Thanksgiving weekend. But what kind of impact would it have on MLS?

Last year, the MLS Cup Playoffs started in earnest on October 31 with the first of two Knockout Round matches. And MLS Cup was played on December 1.

If FIFA approves the November-December schedule for the 2022 tournament at its next FIFA executive committee meeting in October, it could force a future change in the MLS schedule, especially given that World Cup camp typically runs for a month leading into the main event.
