Gold Cup: Herculez Gomez leaves USMNT ahead of quarterfinals

Herculez Gomez poses

Herculez Gomez appears to be on his way out of US national team camp ahead of Sunday’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal match against El Salvador.

The veteran forward Tweeted on Wednesday that he was departing the group, bound for San Diego to connect with Mexican side Club Tijuana, which he joined in June. Mexico's Liga MX begins play this weekend, with Tijuana hosting Atlas on Friday.

Gomez appeared in two of the team’s three group stage matches in the Gold Cup and the team’s tune-up against Guatemala. He came off the bench and played 13 minutes on Tuesday night in a 1-0 win against Costa Rica.

The US team is required to announce any lineup changes for the knockout stages of the tournament by the end of the day Wednesday, and head coach Jurgen Klinsmann indicated after the win Tuesday night that he expects to make changes. Any players added to the roster must come from the 35-man preliminary roster released before the tournament began.
