AMSTERDAM – Hoffenheim left-sider Fabian Johnson is temporarily on the mend after suffering an ankle injury during preseason action at FSV Frankfurt on Saturday.

The US international subsequently traveled with the team to their Austrian training camp, but will spend at least the bulk of this week watching from the sideline.

"He has a partially torn ligament in his left ankle and will need individual rehab for the next days," Hoffenheim press officer Holger Tromp told MLSsoccer.com. "The medics hope he can return to team practice by the end of the week."

Having narrowly escaped relegation last term, Hoffenheim will open the new Bundesliga season when Timothy Chandler's FC Nürnberg come to town on August 10.
