American Exports: Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna suffer humiliating first-round Austrian Cup exit

Terrence Boyd with Rapid Vienna

AMSTERDAM – Second half sub Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna opened their new campaign on a sour note, making a first round Stiegl Cup exit after Sunday's penalty kicks defeat away to Shawn Barry's third-tier LASK Linz.

Midway through the opening half, former Virginia defender Barry nearly put the Regionalliga Central underdogs in front with a header off the bar.

Boyd, who entered a scoreless match for Rapid in the 74th minute, might have bagged a lone goal winner with 10 minutes remaining in extras were it not for a wise rush off his line by home netminder Pervan Pavao.

The match ended scoreless, with Boyd drafted to take his side's fourth try from the spot. The American made no mistake to tie the penalties score at 4-4, but countryman Barry fired LASK back in front with the next kick. Marcel Sabitzer's round five miss then spelled cup doom for Rapid.

The Green-Whites will open the new Austrian Bundesliga season next Saturday at Wolfsberger AC.
