Gold Cup: Canada captain Will Johnson sent back to Portland, will miss Mexico match

Canada's Will Johnson is shown a yellow card in the Gold Cup loss to Martinique.

Things just got worse for the Canadian national team.

The Canucks announced on Wednesday they will be without captain Will Johnson for Thursday's Gold Cup group stage match vs. Mexico at CenturyLink Field in Seattle (11 pm ET, FOX Soccer, UniMas, Sportsnet World in Canada).

Johnson, 26, returned home to Portland, where he plays his club soccer for the Timbers, to recover from an undisclosed stomach illness. While Johnson will not be available for the match against Mexico, he has not been ruled out of any future Gold Cup matches the Canadian national team have.
