Rumor Central: Could Fredy Montero be headed to Portugal this summer? | THE SIDELINE

Fredy Montero

Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero is on loan to Colombian side Millonarios until the end of the 2013 calendar year. A final decision will then be made as to whether or not he returns to his parent club in MLS, remains in Colombia with Millonarios or chooses to pursue options elsewhere, possibly in Europe.

At least, that's what we were lead to believe when the deal went through in January

Following a Tuesday morning radio interview in Colombia by Millonarios club president Felipe Gaitán, we learn that things might not be as cut and dry as that.

"I am not authorized to give any club names, but Montero has an offer from the Portuguese league," said Antena 2 radio host Carlos Antonio Vélez, one of two journalists who conducted the interview with Gaitán.

OK then, so he'll head off to the unnamed Portuguese club when his loan to Millonarios finishes at the end of the year. Portugal is a newly rumored destination for Montero, but not at all surprising given his talent and successes.

But wait, there's more.

"Montero is on a one-year loan, but there's a clause which allows Fredy to leave after this first semester," Gaitan reportedly continued. "We're still waiting to see if that clause becomes effective or not."

Seattle fans hoping for a grand return in December might just be disappointed before the summer's out.
