MLS on Loan: Brian Ownby, Andrew Dykstra help Richmond Kickers surge up USL PRO table

Houston Dynamo loanee Brian Ownby with the Richmond Kickers

The Richmond Kickers surrendered multiple players to their MLS counterparts D.C. United this past weekend, but that didn’t stop them putting several other MLS loanees to good use.

Behind a brace from Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ownby (above) and a clean sheet from United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra, Richmond routed Antigua Barracuda 4-0 last Friday.

Ownby showed a deft touch in the final third when he received a through ball in the 56th minute, rounding the opposing goalkeeper and slotting the ball home for his first tally in the game. His second came by being in the right place at the right time, poaching in the six-yard box and firing the ball home through traffic. The University of Virginia alum now has three goals on the year for the Kickers, who have surged into third place and remain the only undefeated team in USL PRO.

Meanwhile, second-place Harrisburg picked up a win of their own with a 3-1 victory over Antigua on Sunday. Only two Philadelphia Union players were on display in the match, with Cristhian Hernandez going 73 minutes up top and midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin subbing in for the last half-hour of play. The City Islanders are now only four points behind league-leading Orlando City in the standings.

The Rochester Rhinos picked up their second win of the season with a 3-0 defeat of expansion side VSI Tampa Bay last Friday. A trio of New England Revolution players were put to good use in the match, including defender Bilal Duckett. The Rhinos were unable to replicate the win two days later against fourth-place Charleston when they drew 1-1 in Rochester. Duckett again went 90 minutes while midfielder Gabe Latigue started and played 57 minutes. Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Bryce Alderson made a substitute 16-minute appearance for Charleston.

In the NASL, freshly loaned Seattle Sounders player Eriq Zavaleta went the distance for the San Antonio Scorpions in their win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday. The road win could mark a turnaround for the sixth-place side, now three points off third place. Zavelata’s loan is set to end on June 30, so the rookie could see time in two more league matches.

Chicago Fire forward Kellen Gulley made a cameo appearance in Atlanta’s 1-0 win over Ft. Lauderdale that secured first place in the NASL for the Silverbacks.
