Canadian Exports: Lucas Cavallini finding his scoring touch in Uruguay at just the right time

Canada's Lucas Cavallini

With the CONCACAF Gold Cup on the horizon, Lucas Cavallini has found his scoring touch at the right time.

Playing on loan with Juventud de Las Piedras in Uruguay, Cavallini capped off a breakout Clausura season with his 10th goal of the season in Juventud’s 4-4 draw with El Tanque Sisley on Sunday. Juventud finished in eighth place.

In Sweden, goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos is riding a good wave of form, as AIK are unbeaten in three games in the Allsvenskan. Stamatopoulos was in goal to pick up the clean sheet on Thursday as AIK beat Norrkoping 1-0. Through 11 games, AIK are in seventh place with 16 points.

Down in the Superettan, Nik Ledgerwood returned from national team duty to a Hammarby side that was on a bit of a slide following back-to-back losses. But his 90-minute return did nothing to help on Sunday as Hammarby lost their third game in a row, going down 1-0 to GIF.

In Finland, Roger Thompson’s streak of playing every minute of every game for Mariehamn so far in the Veikkausliiga season remains unbroken after he played the full 90 minutes in their 1-0 loss to VPS on Sunday. Mariehamn have 15 points in 11 games and are in ninth place.

The Canadian contingent in Finland had its ranks bolstered by one with the news that former Toronto FC goalkeeper David Monsalve signed with AC Oulu of the Ykkonen on Tuesday. Monsalve joins a team that’s in second place in Finland’s second flight with 11 points through six games this season.

In Singapore, Jerome Baker’s first goal of the season was the winner as Hougang United came back to beat Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Cup 2-1 last Wednesday. Meanwhile, Sherif El-Masri’s horror season in the S-League continued, as he played 90 on Saturday in Young Lions' 13th straight match without a win.
