American Exports: Fabian Johnson & Hoffenheim survive Bundesliga relegation playoff

Fabian Johnson, Daniel Williams celebrate with a Hoffenheim teammate after a goal vs. Augsburg

AMSTERDAM – Fabian Johnson and Hoffenheim successfully completed their survival playoff mission on Monday, maintaining their Bundesliga place with a 2-1 victory against second-leg hosts Kaiserslautern, taking the tie 5-2 on aggregate.

The US international started on the wing, but was shifted to left back for the final hour of play. Johnson was perhaps fortunate to get away with a cross striking his arm in the area just prior to intermission.

In the end, Hoffenheim comfortably clinched their place in the top flight for the sixth straight season.
