GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Freddy Adu’s Brazilian adventure got underway in earnest on Sunday with the start of the national Brasileirão championship, but it didn’t end in the way the American would’ve liked.
The 23-year-old’s side fell 3-1 at Criciúma, with Adu coming on for his league debut for the last seven minutes of the encounter. The former Philadelphia Union player didn’t have time to make any impact on the game, with the final score line already set when he entered the field.

Bahia have had a poor time of it since the American signed, with Sunday’s debut of Cristóvão Borges in the Bahia dugout marking the third full-time coach Adu has had since signing in late March. Adu has struggled for minutes so far, featuring in only four matches and each time coming off the bench in the late stages.
Next up for Bahia is a home date on Wednesday against Coritiba (8 pm ET).
