American Exports: Clint Dempsey & Tottenham Hotspur fail to earn Champions League spot

Clint Dempsey after scoring vs. Man City

Tottenham Hotspur began the final day of the season in 5th place in the Premier League, one point behind Arsenal in the standings. And that's how they finished the day.

US international Clint Dempsey started and went 73 minutes in a 1-0 win for Spurs over Sunderland, but because the Gunners also won, 1-0 at Newcastle, he won't be playing in the UEFA Champions League next year.

Spurs actually appeared headed for a draw for 89 minutes, until Gareth Bale curled a stunning left-footed shot into the side netting to give them hope heading into stoppage time. All they needed was a win in combination with a loss or draw for Arsenal.

But it was not to be. When Bale scored, Arsenal already had a lead, through defender Laurent Koscielny, and minutes later the final whistle blew at both stadiums, dashing Dempsey's oft-stated hopes of playing in the Champions League.
