FRISCO, Texas – FC Dallas are off to the best start in franchise history, and quietly on Saturday night in their 2-0 win over Vancouver, another milestone was set by head coach Schellas Hyndman.
“The owners Dan and Clark [Hunt] were here and they brought Schellas in front of the club," defender George John told reporters in the locker room. “[They] told us he was the all-time winningest coach in club history. Congratulations to him – we’re all happy for him and hopefully we can win more this season.”
After the match, the players awarded Hyndman the game ball.
Goalkeeper Raúl Fernández, although new to the club this season, agreed that it was a special moment in the clubhouse. Speaking through an interpreter, he told MLSsoccer.com that “you can obviously tell [what a great coach he is] from the results we’ve been getting in our games and all the work we’ve been putting in during the week, so it’s just awesome to be able to do that for him.”
Hyndman was introduced as FC Dallas’ coach on June 16, 2008, and his first match in charge of the club was less than a week later in New York (FCD lost 1-0). The first of his 219 points as coach of the club was earned on the road in a 1-1 draw against archrivals Houston Dynamo later that month.
He was playful when asked earlier this week by MLSsoccer.com about the possibility of setting the mark: “Hopefully it happens this year.”
But after Saturday's match – with his daughter looking on in the press conference – he was very introspective, and even a bit emotional, when discussing the achievement.
“As I said to the players, it’s not been an easy road. This is not the easiest profession," said Hyndman. "We put a lot into it, myself, my staff and the players. But nobody gets any awards in this environment without the players and this recognition goes all the way back to our first game that we got a point in.
"So, I’m very, very thankful. I think I’m blessed to be doing what I love and I’ve got a great group of guys in the locker room.”
