The Italian influx continues: Trialist Daniele Paponi tweets deal to stay with Montreal Impact is official

MONTREAL – Transfer dealings sure come together fast in Impactland.

Less than an hour after Impact sporting director Nick De Santis confirmed that the club was “not far” from making a deal for Bologna forward Daniele Paponi official, the player himself tweeted on Friday that his trial in North America had yielded dividends.

“It’s official, I’m staying in Canada,” Paponi tweeted in his native Italian. “I can’t wait to start. Greetings to my former teammates and to Bologna!”

As expected, Paponi will join Montreal on loan, thus filling the 11th and last-remaining international spot in the Montreal Impact roster for 2013. De Santis pointed out on Friday that financial matters regarding such a deal would need to be resolved between the Impact and Bologna, who nonetheless have confirmed the move on the official team site.


Paponi has made a mere three substitute appearances in the Serie A this season, totaling 46 minutes. His last start was on December 19, 2012, a Coppa Italia win against Napoli. In his first contact with the Montreal Impact in November 2012, Paponi scored the only goal in Bologna’s 1-0 win against the MLS club during their tour of Italy.
