AMSTERDAM – Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 missed a chance to improve their Europa League hopes on Friday, falling 3-1 at Bundesliga surprise package Freiburg.
The Reds captain went the distance for the second straight time since returning from a knee injury. Hannover, who have won just once in their last six league games, remained four points adrift of a European berth.
One flight down in the 2.Bundesliga, John Anthony Brooks and Alfredo Morales worked full shifts as first-place Hertha Berlin fought back for a 1-1 share at Ingolstadt.

Brooks got away with a couple of shaky moments at the back, and was also one slightly better finish from notching an assist on a pinpoint long ball just past the hour mark. Despite their rally, the visitors saw their penthouse cushion sliced to two points.
That occurred because Andrew Wooten and Sandhausen dropped a 3-1 home decision to second-place Braunschweig. The loan attacker was relatively quiet over his 72 minutes as the relegation fighters had their win drought extended to five matches.
To the north in Norway, Mikkel Diskerud and Rosenborg saw their perfect start halted by a late own-goal in their 1-1 home draw with IK Start. The US midfielder departed after 85 minutes, scant moments before the visitors pulled level.
Finally, in the Dutch second flight, Charles Kazlauskas and Helmond Sport squandered a chance to go top, losing 3-0 at first place Volendam. Early in his 90 midfield minutes, the American passed up a pair of golden shooting chances.
