Seattle Sounders sign defender Ashani Fairclough, midfielder Phillip Lund

Ashani Fairclough

The Seattle Sounders have reinforced their squad with two signings announced Friday in central defender Ashani Fairclough and midfielder Phillip Lund, both of whom have already trained with the club during the 2013 preseason.

Fairclough, 20, is a former Jamaican youth international at the U-17 level, and spent 2009-12 with the University of South Florida, where he made 73 appearances, contributing 10 assists and a goal in his college career.

"Ashani is very physically gifted,” said Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid in a press release. “He's a fast and powerful defender and has great potential for the future."

Lund, 23, has played professionally in his native Denmark four seasons, featuring most recently for second-division side FC Lyn. Prior to that, he played for Vejle Boldklub in the first division, as well as featuring in a loan spell for Kolding FC. Also a former youth international, Lund featured for the Danish Under-19 national team.

"Phillip is a hard worker who can play multiple positions," Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson in a statement. "His fitness is good, his technique is good, and he looks to shoot when he gets opportunities."

Both players will officially join the roster when their P-1 Visas are processed and their International Transfer Clearances are received.
