American Exports: Brad Friedel, Tottenham escape Inter Milan rally, into Europa League quarters

Brad Friedel and Tottenham celebrate advancing past Inter Milan in Europa League

AMSTERDAM – Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur reached the Europa League quarterfinals despite a 4-1 loss at Inter Milan on Thursday, squeaking through on an extra-time away goal by Emmanuel Adebayor.

The former US star notched 12 saves, including a dazzler on Fredy Guarín near the break and another on Antonio Cassano during the second overtime session. Compatriot Clint Dempsey, however, did not dress for the visitors.

Friedel could not be faulted much on the three Inter goals that sent the tie to extras, including an unfortunate William Gallas own-goal that leveled matters 15 minutes from regulation time.

Five minutes into extra time, Adebayor poked home a Moussa Dembélé rebound, rendering a late Ricky Alvarez reply as mere consolation. Spurs, who have made the last eight of a European tourney for the third time in seven years, will learn their quarterfinal assignment in Friday's draw.
