The Columbus Crew are set to play the University of North Carolina men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in the Kirk Urso Memorial Match, in honor of the Crew midfielder who passed away from a congential heart defect last August at age 22.
The match will kick off at 1 pm ET at the UNC Greensboro soccer stadium, after the surface at the original venue of MacPherson Stadium in Greensboro was deemed unplayable due to inclement weather.
Urso was selected No. 10 overall by the Crew in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft and tallied one assist in six appearances before being sidelined by injury. He passed away on August 5 from an arrhythmogenic right ventricular myopathy.
The match will see the Crew face off against Urso's alma mater, with tickets starting at $10 (buy tickets here). All proceeds from the match will go to the Crew Soccer Foundation's Kirk Urso Memorial Fund, launched in late 2012 to support heart health research and programming. In addition to ticket sales, various memorabilia will be auctioned off
