American Exports: Dempsey, Spurs advance in Europa Lg.

Clint Dempsey in action for Spurs

AMSTERDAM – Brad Friedel and Clint Dempsey moved on to the Europa League sweet 16 on Thursday, thanks to a last-minute Moussa Dembélé strike that earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 second leg draw and 3-2 aggregate victory.

The veteran netminder made two saves, including a second half stunner on Clément Grenier that kept Spurs in position for a rally. Dempsey entered in the 66th minute, quickly going close on a header off a restart.

The visitors looked set to bow out on away goals until Dembélé uncorked the perfect shot from 25 yards just before the start of stoppage time. Tottenham advance to face Inter Milan, who will visit White Hart Lane for the tie opener on March 7.

Meanwhile, Hannover 96 were bounced from the draw without injured captain Steve Cherundolo after settling for a 1-1 home draw against Anzhi Makhachkala. The Reds were one late goal away from leveling the tie before the Russians struck a late equalizer to complete a 4-2 aggregate win.
