American Exports: Jones nets vital Champions Lge. goal

Jermaine Jones

AMSTERDAM – Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones struck an all-important away goal equalizer on Wednesday night, earning his side a 1-1 share against UEFA Champions League Round of 16 hosts Galatasaray.

Ten minutes after picking up yellow card for dissent that will see him suspended for the return leg, the US midfielder ably finished a fast break for the Miners by firing home Jefferson Farfán's centering feed on the stroke of halftime.

Thanks to the US international's second career Champions League knockout goal, Schalke will hold that slim away goal advantage when the two teams reunite to conclude the tie in Gelsenkirchen on March 12.

The goal was the first by an American in the knockout round since DaMarcus Beasley's for PSV in 2005. Jones' previous knockout round goal had come before he'd secured American citizenship.
