Tucson Friendlies: Timbers top Sounders in narrow 1-0 win

Mikael Silvestre in preseason action against Seattle

The first Cascadia clash of 2013 is in the books, as the Portland Timbers edged out the Seattle Sounders 1-0 in their Desert Friendlies clash in Tucson, Ariz, on Tuesday.

Timbers trialist Mikaël Silvestre, formely with Arsenal and Manchester United, scored the lone goal of the game just after the hour mark when he slotted home a loose ball following a corner kick.

Portland had the best looks in the match, keeping the Seattle goalkeeping duo of Marcus Hahnemann (first half) and Josh Ford plenty busy, but eventually needed a favorable bounce to put it through.

Both teams, though especially the Sounders, fielded sides largely composed on trialists and draft picks, most notably former Liverpool man Djimi Traoré, who played the first 45 minutes of the game at center back.

The Timbers will close out the Desert Friendlies when they take on host team FC Tucson on Friday at 1 pm ET. The Sounders will head back home for a week before returning to Tucson for the Desert Diamond Cup, which will see them take on New England, Real Salt Lake and New York and will be streamed live on MLSsoccer.com.
