Soony Saad of Sporting KC

Sporting Kansas City failed to overcome a spirited FC Tucson side in the final game of the first day of the Desert Friendlies tournament, settling for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening.

Soony Saad opened things up for Sporting early on, burying a diving header to in the seventh minute. The MLS side wouldn't hold on for long though, with Patrick Wallen finishing off a move he started himself to give the local side an equalizer a few minutes later.

Tucson almost went up twice through former RSL Academy product Donny Toia soon after equalizing, but Sporting then entered a sustained period of dominance where they failed to find the net despite a series of quality looks.

The Desert Friendlies resume on Thursday with the Houston Dynamo taking on the Colorado Rapids. Sporting will play their next game Friday against the Portland Timbers.
