AMSTERDAM – The five Americans still alive in Europe learned their first knockout assignments on Thursday.
In the Champions League round of 16, Jermaine Jones and Schalke are lined up to face Turkish giants Galasataray for the first time. The Miners will open the tie away from home on Feb. 20.
Meanwhile, Oguchi Onyewu (above) and Málaga were drawn to battle two-time champions Porto. The Anchovies will also begin on the road, with the opening leg set for Feb, 19.
In the Europa League, Clint Dempsey and Brad Friedel are set for a Valentine's Day visit from Lyon in leg one of their round-of-32 tie. If Spurs defeat the French side, they will take on the winner between Romanian outfit Cluj and Inter Milan in the quarterfinals.
Also, Steve Cherundolo's Hannover 96 will square off against Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala, with the home opener scheduled for Feb. 14. Should the Reds advance to the elite eight, they will draw the Metalist Kharkiv-Newcastle survivor.
