Reports: Marquez close to signing with Mexico's Club Leon

Rafa Marquez

From Red Bull to Emerald Green?

Reports have spread throughout Mexico on Monday that Rafa Márquez is set to return to Mexican football with a supposed two-year deal with Liga MX side Club León close to being signed.

The rumor-mongering over the past two offseasons has always suggested that the Mexican international could make a return to Club Atlas – the place where Márquez began his professional career. But the revelation that the embattled Red Bulls Designated Player instead could land with León — semifinalists in the recently completed Apertura season — is a new twist.

“The negotiations are going well,” ESPN.com quotes a source close to the negotiations. “All that’s missing are the details, but this could happen at any minute.”

According to one report, Márquez will arrive in Mexico City on Monday afternoon to finalize the agreement.

RBNY had no comment when contacted on Monday by MLSsoccer.com.

Also connected to Club León is former Chicago Fire DP Nery Castillo, who has spent the past six months at Pachuca. León club president Jesús Martínez may have added some fuel to the fire with a tweet on Monday morning suggesting some movement.
