First, MLS clubs started lobbying for their candidates for Rookie of the Year, sending novelty gifts and making videos in hopes of influencing voters. Honestly, for media members, it's almost like living in a swing state and watching primetime TV in real life.
And now comes a spate of lobbying for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Seattle manager Sigi Schmid was first to break the ice, stumping for his goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, who leads the league in goals against average. Then Sporting KC's Peter Vermes opined that his goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen -- who leads the league in shutouts with 15 -- should be a "slam dunk" to win the award.
