10. Bill Hamid
Pos: G | D.C. United | Age: 21
This year has had its ups and downs for the young 'keeper, who continues to be highly regarded among media and fans. After a 2011 season in which he seemed to stand on his head in certain matches and even earned the confidence of Jurgen Klinsmann with the senior USMNT, Hamid had to endure the fallout from that infamous Olympic qualifying match against El Salvador as well as losing his starting spot to Joe Willis while he was away. He's since retaken the No. 1 job and his season could still have a fairytale ending to it with United needing a stellar effort from him down the stretch as they look to get into the playoffs without injured captain and league MVP Dwayne De Rosario.

What the TDs and coaches like: “A very good shot-stopper … Very athletic … He’s a big guy and hard to beat … He’s got absolutely everything. There’s no two ways about that … He’s slowly getting more consistent … In time, you’re going to see, can he take the next step? … You need to see him develop his ability in the box, to be a bigger presence in the box as far as commanding his box with crossing, managing the game as a leader in the back. That’s going to take time for a young guy.”

Where TDs and coaches want improvement: “Needs to be more consistent. … Still needs to be humble as a young goalkeeper that he’s got a lot to learn. …. He’s good at making the harder saves but needs to make the routine ones and position himself in a way where that’s never going to be an issue … Like with every young goalkeeper, it’s just the experience: of managing the game, managing the emotions … Being in a better position where you don’t have to rely on your athletic ability and you can still make those great saves. Becoming more of a positional goalkeeper.”

Opta Says: Bill Hamid has the best big chance prevention percentage of any player younger than 24 in MLS this year (47.4 percent).
