WATCH: Eddie Johnson's brace downs Chivas USA
Eddie Johnson is fast taking the place of Sacha Kljestan as the player USMNT supporters most feel deserves a breakthrough call-up.
The Sounders forward, who has 42 caps and 12 goals for his country, continues to find the net with regularity in MLS and his brace against Chivas USA on Saturday earned him the top spot in the Castrol Weekly Top 20 as the top performer in MLS over the last week (read all about the Castrol methodology here).
The goals also added to EJ's season total, lifting him to fourth in the league charts (13), just five away from top scorer Chris Wondolowski.
But are they enough to launch Johnson in the discussion with current USMNT forwards Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd and Herculez Gomez? Wondolowski, who had been a regular in Klinsmann's recent rosters, was left off the most recent World Cup qualifying roster for the matches against Jamaica.
No need to a double take. Yes, those are seven Colorado Rapids players who take the cake as far as the team with the most players represented.
The light schedule -- only four league matches were played between last Wednesday and Saturday -- rewarded the Rapids, who landed seven players in this week's Top 20. Six other spots were also occupied by players whose teams currently stand outside the playoff picture (New England, Chivas USA and Portland).
Rapids rookie Tony Cascio (No. 2) made a strong impression over the FIFA international window, carrying his team in its 3-0 win over Portland. Cascio's teammate, Andre Akpan (No. 5), similarly scored a goal and earned high praise from manager Oscar Pareja, who singled him out for more playing time in the future.
