AMSTERDAM – Champions League participants Málaga have confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that they have clinched a season loan deal for Sporting CP defender Oguchi Onyewu, along with an option to buy.
The US international was recently placed on the transfer list by new Sporting boss Ricardo Sá Pinto, drawing interest from the likes of Anderlecht, Bordeaux and Real Zaragoza. Over the weekend, he turned down the chance to join another La Liga side, Levante.
Onyewu has been assigned jersey No. 4 in joining a backline stable that also includes Argentina veteran Martín Demichelis. Málaga, who begin Champions League group-stage action with a Sept. 18 home tilt against Russian kings Zenit St. Petersburg, will visit Zaragoza in league play on Saturday.
