Honduras, Jamaica tab total of 15 MLSers for FIFA date

Jerry Bengtson, Honduras, reacts to his goal against Spain in the London Olympics.

The US roster for the upcoming FIFA date won’t be released until Sunday, but nearly three dozen MLS players have already gotten their August international assignments.

Including Canada’s roster, which was released on Friday and includes players from all three Canadian MLS clubs, 35 MLS-based players will be representing their home countries next week.

As usual Jamaica have put forth a strong contingent with nine players called in, and are joined at the top of the heap by Honduras with a half-dozen of their own. The Catrachos’ list includes Olympic heroes Jerry Bengtson (New England), Roger Espinoza (Sporting KC) and Mario Martinez (Seattle Sounders), though D.C. United flanker Andy Najar has been allowed to stay with his club.

Also of note is Philadelphia Union defender Carlos Valdés getting the call for his native Colombia. Los Cafeteros managers have been notoriously reluctant to call in MLS-based players in the past, but it looks like the rock-steady central defender has worked his way into the mix. Colombia don't have a game lined up, and are instead set for a four-day training camp in Spain ahead of next month's CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Chile.
