Recap: RSL dominate but can't put Seattle away in 0-0 tie

SANDY, Utah — Real Salt Lake's struggles at home continued Wednesday night as a 0-0 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium extended their winless streak to four in a wasteful performance against the visiting Seattle Sounders.

And although the result stretches Seattle's franchise record winless run further to nine games, the visitors will be happy to earn a point in a game where the hosts had most of the run of play.

RSL neatly knocked the ball around for long, long stretches in the first half, controlling possession, creativity and scoring opportunities.

But the only stat that really matters showed the two teams were dead even, scoreless 0-0 at the break.

The second half continued much the same way. It appeared Salt Lake had taken the lead in the 52nd minute as striker Álvaro Saborío hit the back of the net following a ball to the middle, but a narrow decision went against them with the side official ruling the Costa Rican international was offsides.

As the half wore on, the RSL attack continued. Time and time again the hosts knocked it around, stringing together five, 10 and sometimes 20 passes before something either broke down or Salt Lake missed a shot.

In the 87th minute, the visitors nearly punished RSL for their wastefulness as Seattle substitute Cordell Cato was agonizingly close to betting his foot on a ball into an empty net on a cross from Mauro Rosales. That, however, was the last of the great scoring chances for the two teams until the final whistle.

CHALKBOARD: RSL's midfield dominated the match

While Salt Lake halted their three-game losing streak with a draw, they're still winless in four. They'll next try to gather a full three points when they host the Portland Timbers on Saturday.

Seattle get their chance to break their own hex on Saturday also when they host the Colorado Rapids.
