Guatemala's Arreola reveals he nearly accepted MLS offer

Jairo Arreola of Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY – Fresh off a 1-1 draw with the US national team, Guatemalan attacker Jairo Arreola revealed that he had been in talks with two MLS teams as recently as last week, before signing for a club in Slovakia.

“I was in negotiations with MLS, but everything fell apart because of the offers from Slovakia,” Arreola said. “There were talks with the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas.”

The dynamic attacker has been a key for local side Comunicaciones since 2005, most recently pairing with MLS all-time leading goalscorer Jeff Cunningham during the 2012 Clausura. This week, Arreola agreed to a one-year deal with Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava, the 2011 champion of the Super Liga. Despite the move to Europe, the forward said he’s still interested in playing in MLS in the future.

“I’ve always wanted to go [to MLS],” he said. “Maybe one day. It’s a league that really interests me. It’s in the Americas, and I’ve always wanted to play there.”
