Red Bulls' Marquez could join Mexico for London Olympics

Rafael Marquez

Whether it’s been through injury or suspension, Rafa Márquez has missed a chunk of games for the New York Red Bulls this season

He might miss even more in the near future.

Following Mexico’s 2-0 win against Wales at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sunday, reports surfaced that the controversial midfielder could be one of the three overage players El Tri select for the Olympics this summer. If Márquez were to be chosen, he could miss up to a month’s worth of games from the middle of July to the middle of August.

“We knew that before, that it could be a possibility that he would leave for the Olympics,” Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe told reporters on Monday. “We haven’t heard anything yet, and they probably haven’t picked the guys that can be involved, but if it is like that, we just have to accept it.”

Márquez, who came off the bench and played 13 minutes on Sunday for Mexico, has missed more games this season for New York (seven) than he has played (six).
